What Vaccines Does Your Puppy Need? There is now different vaccination guidelines now recommended than what was recommended in
the past years. The views on what vaccines dogs do and do not need are changing. There are MANY articles you can find on the internet that suggests that the old standard guidelines on vaccinating may have caused serious health problems in some dogs. It is also suggested that dogs are over-vaccinated and given vaccines entirely unnecessary. I recommend you check out some of these articles on the internet. You will find an abundance of sites offering all kinds of information pertaining to these issues. I will provide you with the vaccination selections that I myself recommend. Though of course in the end it is up to you to decide. If your vet insists on administering vaccines to your puppy that you do not want, then I suggest you find another vet. I will tell you though that you definitely should not give your dog the"LEPTOSPIROSIS" portion of the vaccine. Dachshunds are a breed that is very prone to having a reaction to this vaccine. Again, on the internet you can find this information. I myself have experienced this problem quite a few times in my own dogs and know of several other Dachshund breeders who also have. Whatever you decide to do, it's a good idea to make your appointment for your puppy's shots early in the week and early in the day so that if your puppy does have any problems you can take him right back to the vet's office, otherwise you will have to go to the emergency clinic which will cost you about $ 75.00 to walk in the door.Your vet on the other hand will probably only charge for the medication he will have to give your puppy. My dogs and puppies are vaccinated with only the "core vaccines". Core vaccines are as follows: distemper, canine adenovirus/infectious caninehepatitis, canine parvovirus, canine parainfluenza virus, and rabies. All other vaccines are "non-core". Of the non-core vaccines, I do recommend the bordetella (for kennel cough) if you will be having your dog exposed to other dogs that are not from your home on a regular basis, or if you will be boarding your dog in a facility. I also recommend the giardia vaccine IF giardia seems to be a problem in your area. Good informationon this topic can be found HERE, and HERE.
The charts at the bottom of the page on the site are very handy. Note the recommendations for boosters.
