HOUSETRAINING YOUR PUPPY

Begin house-training your puppy at 12 weeks of age. Taking him
outside sooner just to be lucky enough that he does his
business out there and not in your house is fine. But wait until he
is 12 weeksto start real house training. They are not mentally
capable of it any sooner. Would you try and potty train a 6 month
old child? Of course not! Your puppy will need to go to the bath-
room every time he wakes up, shortly after eating, and during mid
play time. Puppies urinate very frequently. Do not wait for your
puppy to let you know he wants out or go to the door (it would be
nice but that's just not going to happen right now!). Take him out
many times through-out the day and evening and just before bed.
Be patient! He WILL eventually get the idea. Keeping up a routine
is very important in this area. He will not be fully house-trained
until about 6 months of age. The weather can also delay this a bit.
Do not leave your puppy outside alone at this young age. Do not
put your puppy's nose to his "mess"and spank him. This is not
necessary and he will become afraid of you, maybe even becoming
a submissive urinater ( urinating out of fear when you approach
him.) Just keep up the routine and it will become habitual for him.
Oh, and by the way, Dachshunds HATE rain and wet grass. Even
as adults.

GROOMING

Smooth coat Dachshunds are very clean. We give our Dach-
shunds a bath 2 times a year, in the spring and again in the fall.
Of course if your Dachshund gets into something smelly ( they
love rolling in dead things, like most dogs do!) then you will need
to wash him then too. We use a mild shampoo, free of chemicals.
We use Johnsons Baby bath to wash the entire facial area (does
not burn the eyes.) Bathing your dog too much can lead to skin
problems and can even actually cause them to have an odor.
Clean your Dachshunds ears once weekly with a dog ear wash.

For flea prevention I highly recommend "Frontline". This can
be purchased at your vets office or many pet supply stores
now carry it. It is usually kept behind the counter, so you will
have to ask for it. "Advantage" is good too, but does not take
care of ticks. If you give your dog a bath first, then you must
wait 2 days before applying either product. Be sure to observe
the age requirements on the label. We only apply "Frontline"
in the spring and again mid summer. It is good for flea preven-
tion for 3 months. Ticks- 1 month. It is much easier and cheaper
to prevent fleas than to wait until your dog is actually infested
with them and trying to rid your home of them.

Clip the tips of your dogs toenails once every 2-4 weeks as
needed.

COAT CARE OF THE DILUTE COLORS

Inside Care - (Highlighted items are links where you can buy the items).

1. Top quality dog food is of utmost importance.

2. Add a fatty acid supplement capsule to your dog's food once daily. DERM CAPS is one example. One with multiple oil sources is better than only one oil source. I myself get Member's Mark Omega Complex containing natural fish oil, flaxseed, borage & safflower oil from WalMart or Sam's Club from the vitamin section. It is just as good, if not better, than canine formulas.

Outside Care :

1. For regular bathing, use a mild, soap free shampoo such as HYLYT MOISTURI- ZING SHAMPOO or DVMD-BASIC SHAMPOO  If the dog has the dermatitis bumps on the skin wash with EQyss MICRO-TEKMEDICATED SHAMPOO or DVM MALESEB SHAMPOO (most vets carry this.) Wash two or 3 times weekly as needed to clear up the bumps. Never use harsh shampoos or flea shampoos and only use the mentioned medicated shampoos when needed.

2. Conditioner - For regular use I recommend MEGA-TEK COAT REBUILDER FOR PETS. For use during a dermatitis breakout I recommend the medicated conditioner VIRBAC ResiCHLOR Leave-on Lotion (many vets carry this.)

3. Dry your dog GENTLY. Never rub hard with towel and NEVER rub the coat in the opposite growth direction.

4. Avoid use of collars and harnesses except when needed. Remove immediately after use.
