FEEDING PUPPY

Your puppy needs to be fed 3 times a day. Your puppy may not eat well for the first 1 or 2 days. You may have to encourage him to eat by taking some in your hand and offering it to him.  Just add enough water to the dry food to slightly soften up the food. Do not make it soggy.  Mix 1 - 3 heaping tablespoons (depending on size of puppy) of  dry food with a splash of hot water. Let it soak for a few minutes and then add about 1 or 2 teaspoons of canned food, heat about 10 seconds in the microwave then mix well. Check to make sure it's not too hot. In addition to the 3 daily feedings of this mix, leave a small bowl of dry food available through-out the day. Provide fresh water all day. As your puppy grows you will need to increase the quantity of food.

At 4 - 6 months of age (depending on size and how well puppy is eating) your puppy's feedings should be reduced to 2 times a day. Also you no longer need to soak the food. Simply mix the dry food with 1 or 2 teaspoons of canned food, add a splash of hot water and mix well, then feed immediately. At 9 to 12 months of age he should be put on a "maintenance formula" of adult dog food. As an adult he only needs to be fed 2 times daily with no food being left down through-out the day anymore. 1/3 level cup in the morning and 1/3 cup in the evening is all he needs. Continue to mix a small amount of canned food with a little hot water mixed in.

If you do not want to use canned food for your puppy/dog, cottage cheese or plain yogurt mixed into the dry instead works great and is very healthy for them.

I recommend SMALL dog biscuits for treats. We now use OLD MOTHER HUBBARD biscuits in the mini size. ALPO VARIETY SNAPS are fine too. 1 biscuit daily is sufficient. We give ours at bedtime. Dachshunds are prone to becoming overweight. Do not let this happen to yours or you will most likely incur health and back problems later in your dogs life, very possibly shortening his life span. If you find at some point he has become overweight, I have found that reducing the quantity of food (down to 1/4 cup) works better than feeding a "diet" formula. Keep in mind that handing your small dog a small treat 2 or 3 times a day can constitute an actual meal for him! Do not worry about weight issues while your Dachshund is a puppy. Puppies need to eat well and often. Adult-hood is when it can become a problem.

I use PMI Exclusive, Premium Edge, and Eagle Pack dry dog food for my adults. I'll switch off to another food every few months because I have a few that seem to get bored with the same food for so long. I ALWAYS stick to high quality foods though. We were feeding our puppies Eagle Pack Puppy Food but due to a problem of some people that buy a puppy and cannot find it in their area, we have switched to Eukanuba Puppy Small Breed as it seems to be widely available. Canned Food - We use Triumph and Nutro's Natural Choice for the adults and puppies both.

Other top quality foods I recommend:

Premium Grades -

Natural Balance, Chicken Soup, Canidae, Innova, Eukanuba-Original, Eagle Pack Holistic, Solid Gold (in no particular order.) There are more, these are just some I have had experience with.

Medium Grades (lower cost) -

Professional Lamb & Rice, Diamond Lamb & Rice or Chicken & Rice (the other Diamond formulas I do not care for) Pro Plan Turkey & Barley.

These foods can be found at pet supply stores, pet shops, and Veterinary Hospitals.

There is no brand that I recommend that can be found in a grocery store or Wal-Mart.

If you MUST buy your food there, please choose the Purina One. As I said, if you MUST.

So, just what's in that dog food you're using? Exactly what are those ingredients, anyways? Go to  http://www.dogfoodproject.com/ and find out what's in YOUR dog food! Check out all the topics under "Commercial Dry Foods" for some absolutely excellent information. Find your food under "products".
