CRATING YOUR PUPPY

You puppy should never be left free to roam while nobody is home. They are much like toddlers and can easily get themselves into harmful situations. Crating your puppy or blocking them in a small area such as the kitchen while you are gone is best. Provide a bed and a few toys. If you are going to be gone for quite some time, then you need to leave food and water also.

If you will be crating your puppy at night, layer the crate with newspaper and place a bed in the back and provide 1 toy. Do not place food and water in the crate (unless as stated above, you will be gone for a long stretch of time during the day). You will need to play with your puppy for at least 30 minutes before you put him to bed. If he is sleeping, wake him up! Let him have a small drink after play before putting him to bed. Do not put him to bed until the very last minute when you are ready to go to bed yourself. Cover the crate with a sheet or light-weight blanket and provide a night-light nearby. The first several nights your puppy WILL cry! This is normal. He is alone without his mother or litter-mates. If you truly plan to have him sleep in his crate every night, DO NOT OPEN THE CRATE DOOR! DO NOT GIVE IN! If you do so, you will be doing this EVERY night maybe SEVERAL times a night. If you do take him out and let him sleep with you (yes, it''ll work but this will be permanent) keep him in the middle of the bed and provide 1 toy. Also you will then have to get up at least once during the night to let him use the bathroom.

NO PUPPY SHOULD BE CRATED ALL DAY LONG WHILE THE OWNER IS AT WORK!!! THIS IS MENTAL CRUELTY FOR YOUR PUPPY!!!

Instead, buy some baby gates for the kitchen, or use a laundry room or bathroom area. If there are no windows, leave a light on. Temperatures that are too hot/cold for you are also too hot/cold for your puppy!
